Digital Nomad Visa for Spain: Complete Guide
On December 22, 2022, the modification to the Entrepreneur Law was published in the Official State Gazette, which introduced the Teleworker Residence Permit for International Workers, also known as the Digital Nomad Visa. This visa will allow you to reside and work remotely from Spain.
Who Can Apply for the Digital Nomad Visa?
Non-EU citizens who meet one of the following criteria can apply:
- Hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree.
- Have a degree from a prestigious vocational school.
- Have at least 3 years of experience in their field.
Additionally, a digital nomad worker can be either:
- An employee (working for a company): The worker must work for a company located outside Spain.
- A self-employed worker (working for themselves): If you have your own business, you can work remotely from Spain for companies located outside of Spain. Your income from Spanish companies must not exceed 20% of your total professional activity.
Other Requirements for the Digital Nomad Visa
- Be over 18 years old.
- Not be irregularly residing in Spain.
- No criminal record in Spain or in the countries where you have resided in the last two years.
- Not listed as inadmissible in countries with agreements with Spain.
- Health insurance (public or private) with an authorized provider in Spain.
- Proof of sufficient financial resources for yourself and accompanying family members.
- Proof of payment of the application fee.
Documentation Required for the Digital Nomad Visa
- Proof that the company with which you have a professional relationship has been established and has been operating for at least one year.
- Proof that you are authorized to perform remote work.
- If you are an employee (working for others): A document proving you have been working for the company for at least three months prior to the application.
- If you are self-employed (working for yourself): A document proving that you have been working for one or more companies for at least three months prior to the application.
- Proof of sufficient financial resources for yourself and your family, such as salary slips (pay stubs), bank products, and other supporting documents.
- Declaration of no criminal record.
Financial Requirements for the Digital Nomad Visa
- The applicant must prove that they have 200% of the Minimum Interprofessional Wage (SMI), which is €33,152 for 2024.
If the applicant also wishes to apply for residence for accompanying family members, they must prove that they have 75% of the SMI for the first accompanying family member, which is €12,432, and 25% of the SMI for each additional family member, which is €4,144.
How to Apply for the Digital Nomad Visa
You can apply for the Digital Nomad Visa from the Consular Office in your country of origin or from Spain.
The Relocate Abogados team suggests that clients apply from Spain, as the Unit for Large Companies processes the application more efficiently, whereas some consular offices may have additional requirements. Moreover, if you apply from Spain, the visa will be granted for three years, unless the applicant requests a shorter period.
