Can You Practice Your Profession in Spain? Learn About the Homologation of Foreign Titles

Have you ever wondered if you can practice your profession in Spain or what the homologation of a foreign degree involves? In this article, we provide the necessary information and essential steps for homologating your degree so that you are qualified to practice your profession in Spain. We’ll also explain that not all professional titles need homologation to work in the country.

What is Degree Homologation?

Degree homologation is an administrative process through which the competent authority, the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities, evaluates a foreign degree, the study plan, and the list of subjects to recognize the foreign academic degree as equivalent to its Spanish counterpart.

Definitions of Key Terms:

It’s important to clarify some concepts. A degree refers to a document certifying the completion of a course of study within a specific educational system. For example, a diploma confirming the completion of secondary education or a degree awarded after completing university or technical studies. This degree is considered foreign if it was obtained through an educational system outside of Spain or within Spain under a different educational regime (e.g., a medical degree obtained within the Chilean educational system).

As you can see, the nationality of the student has no bearing on the degree homologation process. A Spanish citizen, for example, could have studied in a system other than Spain’s.
