As you may have heard, Spain has become an excellent destination for higher education. You can apply for a study stay visa from your country of origin or from Spain after entering as a tourist. How Can I Apply for a Study Stay Visa?
To apply for a study stay visa, you must have been accepted into an authorized higher education institution in Spain. With this acceptance, you fulfill one of the key requirements to apply for a study stay visa.
Requirements for the Study Stay Visa
- You must be legally present in Spain.
- You cannot be a citizen of the European Union.
- You must not be included in the list of individuals inadmissible to Spain under agreements with other countries.
- You must have no criminal record in Spain or in the countries where you have resided in the last 5 years.
- You must prove that you have sufficient financial resources for yourself and your accompanying family members.
- For the applicant: 100% of the IPREM (Indicador Público de Renta de Efectos Múltiples) monthly, which for 2024 is €600. If you can prove you have prepaid accommodation, it can be reduced to 50% of the IPREM, which would be €300.
- For accompanying family members: 75% of the IPREM for the first family member (€450), and 50% of the IPREM for each additional family member (€300).
- Public or private health insurance from an authorized insurer in Spain.
- Medical certificate stating that you do not have any diseases that could have severe public health implications, according to the International Health Regulations of 2005.
- For unaccompanied minor applicants, parental authorization is required.
Documents Required for the Study Stay Visa Application
- Application form: If applying from outside Spain, use the National Visa Application form. If applying from within Spain, use the Official EX-00 form.
- Valid passport with a minimum validity for the requested stay period.
- Proof of financial means: Bank statements, pay slips, notarial declarations, etc.
- Health insurance: Public or private insurance from an authorized entity in Spain.
- Medical certificate: Proving the applicant does not have any diseases that can impact public health according to the International Health Regulations.
- Criminal background certificate: Must be legalized with no more than three months of validity.
- If the applicant is a minor without parents or guardians accompanying them, parental authorization is required, along with confirmation from the responsible institution or organization.
Where Do I Apply for the Study Stay Visa?
- If outside Spain: You must submit your study stay visa application at the Spanish Consulate corresponding to your country of residence.
- If inside Spain: You can submit your application at the Foreigners’ Office in your city, according to your place of residence, or through a legal representative such as a law office.
When Should I Apply for My Study Stay Visa in Spain?
You must submit your application within the first 60 days of your arrival in Spain as a tourist.

- Duration: The visa is granted for one year or the duration of your studies.
